View Full Version : Chattanooga-Tennessee River Gorge Run, 7.31

Isaac here, so for those of you who haven't been monitoring the noise under the general "Where is Tex theme", here it is and feel free to catch up...

http://www.donzi.org/forum/showthread.php/1156-Specs-on-Tex-s-new-Cruiser

And the end result has been the genesis of a little river run up the Tennesee River Gorge towards Chattanooga and back.
Jill and I ran this a couple of weeks ago as part of a poker run out of Hale's Bar in Jasper, Tn. as a warm-up to the AOTH run.
Hedgehog and his lovely bride Christina hosted us and RedDog on their big Chris Roamer, which did not suck. Nope, not at all.

So we have interest in this little impromptu run from:

-Your's truly and better half Jill, 22 Classic
-Bill and Christina, 18X
-Randy and Barb, 22 Crit
-Jim, 22 Crit
-Scott and Heidi, 22 Crit
-Cliff and Di, 22 Crit
-Byron and Jill, 22 Classic
-Jerry, 22 Classic
-Lippy, 20 Cigarette

So there you are, so far.

Hales Bar is a nice little spot with RV sites, plenty of slips, easy ramp facilties, and a pretty sweet row of water front floating cabins viewing the goings-on out on the Tennessee River.

So who else wants to do this? Could be something pretty cool and Bill needs to grab some places for us to stay.

Softy...

Yeah, and the water slide is a real crowd pleaser.

They have one and two bedroom floating cabins available and one and three bedroom non-floating. If you are coming, I would recommend reserving something. It is usually no problem but sometimes they seem to book up on random weekends. I did not talk to my usual person so I will get some more intel tomorrow. I am heading down this evening.

We have a number of options for fun. I was thinking about having everyone to the Roamer on Fri night. I will check on the community room for Sat night. I will also looking dock space for lunch on Sat. I am probably taking the Roamer to Chatt on tomorrow night for dinner and drinks. I can check with Marine Max for the summer schedule since they manage the city docks.

Burning the candle at both ends. That is pretty good. Yep, pretty much an excuse. Falls on deaf ears from a guy that hits 12-15 hour days looking at some largest bank credits in the nation. Yeah, I run from NY to Cali too. As a matter of fact I am in Puerto Rico now and they don't fly me in to look at the kiddy stuff. Boats? yeah I have a few yet can still check in.

The guy that never left......

Now bring back the Real Last Real Texan. Summer is here dang it!:w:

I would not bust you if you could not handle it. Now bring that beast up. Better yet, give me a couple of weeks and I will join you!

I would recommend staying at Hale's Bar. That is where most of the group will be hanging out. If you want to do your own thing, the Dock's at downtown are nice. There are several good hotels that are walking distance from the dock. You will want to specify an inside slip as they are more protected.

Once we get a head count, I will talk to Marty at MarineMax and reserve some space for lunch on Sat.

The Hedgehog

If we can get a group of us coming in at a good time on Fri, I was going to take the group for a late afternoon cruise on the Roamer. If it looks like we have a bunch of stragglers, we may just do a meet and greet at the Roamer. Dinner plans will be loose on Friday. We have restaurant at Hale's Bar that has good beer, burgers and pub food. Or we can mobilize a group to the Mexican restaurant in Jasper. They have MEAN drinks at the Mexican place so we would need drivers for those that like a cocktail. You can ask my father about that place. He is no weak drinker but that is the only time I have seen him in a falling down state.

We are doing a run up the gorge on Sat. I am considering an 11:00 central departure. It is a nice 45min to an hour to Chattanooga. It can be done in less but I like to run hard for a while and then take it in. It is a beautiful place. Sometimes I like to get hung on a log so I can wait for Tripper to extract me.

When we get back, it would be fun to raft up in the swimming hole by the bluffs. It is a nice sheltered cove with good anchor water. If need be, we can take Tex's boat or the Roamer for amenities.

I am planning a cook out at A Dock for Sat night. I have discussed this with the A-dock crowd and they gave the idea a big thumbs up.

Sundays are good for misc rides and general fun.

For cabins we have a number of options. Hale's Bar has both floating and non floating cabins available. They have pros and cons. You can tie up your boat up to the floating cabins so that is kind of fun. The regular cabins are closer to A-Dock and that will be the primary hang out location.

Byron and our two Jill's are in, working on Jerry and Diane.
Jerry is trying to get his new trawler in the water, but I know
he wants to show up and run his Donzi with us. So he is a maybe.

Got Russ and Sheila, Scott and Heidi, Jim and maybe, Janice.

LRT, Hedge and Christina. Tim gave me a "I will keep it in mind"
response when I pinged him about it. So the RedDogs are a maybe.

Pretty good crowd, pretty good crowd. All the way around.

Griz, tell Barb it is close to you guys for an easy tow, nice river ride with beautiful scenery,
and not to mention, great company, what's not to like?

The Hedgehog
06-23-2010, 04:12 PM
Donzi Vol will also be there. Stephen McLamb from Guntersville will also be coming. That is two more 18's.

Tex says he is going. Maybe he will be for sure if Grizz is there. Tex, his son and my father are in the Pacemaker heading up the Tn Tom right now. I will meet them on Fri at Pickwick for the final push to Chattanooga. The Blue ZX is looking kind of lonely in the storage building. He has to officially answer or else he will not be allowed to play in the Reindeer Games.

Trawlers, Cruisers and the like can be used year around. They actually extend the Donzi season since you can jump in and warm up. This is especially important if you don't have a ski mask like the Tripper. Summer is time for performance boats.

So a big question is if Buiz is bringing the big Land Yacht. If so, I will need to reserve a spot for him on the end near A-Dock. If he gets too far into the RV Park, he may get stuck hanging out on the Mini Golf Course.

Now I am off to find some more of Jim's crazy avatars

GMSE here reporting in with a status report:

We are picking them up today from our local Milford, Michigan butcher. Best grill meats we have ever had, after living a lot of places. Should have about two-dozen of the buggers. Donated by the Midwest Donzi Club. Thanks Byron and Jerry for agreeing to kick-in a little here.

We will also throw a few pieces of bone-in-breast chicken out there for those in the crew who don't feel like tackling a big chunk of beef.

Tim and Deb are bringing a big bunch of twice-baked potatos and Bill and Christina are providing a salad.

We are going to need some appetizers, maybe some more sides, and perhaps a dessert or two. So you gourmets out there, plan on bringing something for the feast!

Going to be good! A Donzi crew NEVER goes hungry and they won't on A-Dock Saturday night!

I think that we have a big assed tent.

I will check on the tables. We should be ok, but I need to ask.

I will snap some pics this weekend.

A dock is a prototype version of the Redneck Yacht club. These guys perfected the art way before the song. Parts are hard to explain and parts are easy. These guys have basically taken over a peninsula that juts out in the marina. The neat thing is that you can park right in front of your boat. They have everything from folks that stay on 29 foot Bayliners to a nice Ocean Alexander (but he just either left or got run off). These guys Jamie and Bobby have been around for a good while. Jamie has a tiki bar and a hot tub in front of his boat. Bobby has a garage with a flat screen, bar, commercial ice maker fridge, etc. Before moving to A-dock, I was cautioned many times by both the marina staff and the cliques from other docs. They were pretty wild in the day. Some paranormal activity still happens. I have found them to be a nice bunch of folks that have a good time. I don't regret my move.

Rules on A dock.....

1. Drive slow. We do not want you to run over the dogs. People are on their own but the dogs are important.
2. Drive slow. Feel free to shoot firearms and streak, but drive slow.
3. Drive slow.
4. Drink lots and be sociable.
5. Be prepared to eat lots.
6. Bring loud boats. We all know that this can **** people off in some marinas, but at A dock it brings a round of applause. 80+ mph drive by's on the lake are encouraged.
7. Drink lots
8. Drive slow (once again, cars not boats)

Griz, everything you need is no more than 100 feet or so away at A-Dock. But, you might want the scooter to get to your cabin, which is a little further off. Hedge, chime in here.

I do like those dock rules and they are spot-on from my first visit down there. One more, people with attitudes can leave, unless that attitude includes saying hello to everyone, drinking what is handed to you (this one caught Bill in a big way when somebody handed him a tumbler of white lighting OMG), and paying attention with respect to the fly-bys!

Saaah-lute!

Tower, request permission for fly-by. Maverick, this is the Tower, your request is denied. Maverick to Tower, that is an affirmative and thank you... BOOM!

OMG, I almost forgot about the white lightning. Wait, I barely remember after that anyway, pretty much lights out after that.

Grizz, where did you get the cabin?

We will probably hang around Tex's boat a good bit for the local. It is about 5 feet away from the parking lot.

We have been working on logistics for several days to get this pulled off, but it looks like Kathy and I will be attending with the 22. :shift: (Tough to get time off on the last weekend of the month in the car biz, not to mention child care issues.) Still not sure what days(s) other than likely arrival early Sat AM and departing late Sat PM. We may have a straggler, but should have a seat or 2 available. Grizz, glad you and Barb are well and if you hear from Tom maybe he would like a spin in the Tomahawk again?

Kathy is a mean baker so desserts can be arranged. Any other food needed? We are looking forward to seeing y'all again and meeting some more of you. Please let us know what we can bring.

Shoot first and ask questions later. Just come on down. I hooked Buiz up with a floating cabin yesterday. We have floors, couches and showers.....it will be fine. I have a friend that does not even own a boat coming up from B'ham just to see the Donzi's. He has no clue where he is sleeping.

As Buiz says.....The Roamer sleeps 10 and screws 20. Given that the dude/women ratio, I don't think that the 20 thing is a reality so nothing paranormal to worry about there.

As of now I have 7 in the Roamer. SE and Jill have dibs on the front room (and yes, by all means come Thurs), Donzi Vol has the back stateroom. It has twin beds so he may share it with Steven Mc:Lamb. My friend Brett Elrod will take the upstairs couch or the back stateroom if he beats McLamb to it. That leaves the couch in the dining room (aka The Departure Lounge) on the Roamer avail. The Roamer has 3 full bathrooms so showers etc will not be a problem. Beyond that you get into chairs and the bridge. Lots of room but no A/C on the bridge. Team Hedge will be in the master SR.

Tex and Weas are staying on Esperanza. His wife will come down Sat night so he has a bunk or two extra until then. Esperanza has two heads and is a big boat.

This does not include the pull out couches in the cabins. I am sure that you can find a good place to crash with a bed and shower.

Funny thing is, up until last night there really wasn't any smack talk going around about Chatt. It was a little strange, I must admit. And I do have the reputation of throwing it around, so ya just run with it. As for Sandbagging, I am just a novice compared to a few others that will be in the hood at Hales Bar, but to even be mentioned in the same context is good for this wannabe.

In regards to the top secret cav plate, we are on to v2, and it has nothing to do with the Cig Boys, as it was designed and created by Donzi Crew right here. Truth? The thing slows the Flowerpot down, but the handling improvements and the durability factor, sick of the old shrapnel drive part game as referenced by Trueser, are driving me to stick with it and tune the boat to it, which is taking a ton of time. If all I was worried about was speed, we could just mount up the Break-O-Matic IMCO plate with a P5 Hydro and go drag ZX's, slot car style.... Just might.

Fear the Flowerpot! Yeh right.

You guys let that "I'll leave an hour early to make sure I get where you are going, too" stuff stand, and I get hauled out as the Sandbagger? I might be a Sandbagger, but only in an honorary/decoy sense, for the real Sandbaggers in attendance. Funny, how I can run the living crap out of the SE and never totally lose my wingmen, Buizilla and Madpoodle. Remind me tell you about the chisled pitch numbers on a prop on a certain, darker color Crit a year or two ago at Lake George. Classic stuff.

Then, there is Itillfli, Mr. People's Choice Mean Machine Award Winner for AOTH X. And Dad taught him all the River-running tricks, so you will get no breaks...

As for me, now that I'm going to commit to the plate, I need to start propping the boat. Maybe, Griz will have some mercy on me and let me try that OXP again. The nose of the Flowerpot feels like somebody attached an anchor to it, so we need a little lift. I'll be lucky to keep up with Hedge in the x-18, whimper, whimper...

We will get up and roll Friday morning. Should be in a little after lunch.

"We" must mean the new guy on the dock.

I use the time zone where we are actually staying. It is the only way I can keep it clear. The marina now operates on central as they should. They had to do it too because folks kept showing up at wrong times. I have spent a number of years living on the edge of a time zone. There are fewer missed appointments as a result. The only way it works it to remember that and use the timezone of your physical location. I have managed crews of people that tried to use the time zone of another location just because it was a bigger place. Once I made them operate on "local time" many of the problems went away.

Georgia people that have not been around the marina for very long do it the other way. We have one or two old timers at the marina that still fight that (aka Garth).

When going to Chattanooga, you always need to remember that.

I talked to Marine Max and they agreed to let us park in the protected area on the inside of the floating docks for $10 per boat.

It is usually $1 per foot. They manage it for the city and can't really give it away (at least to 10-15 boats). For those that don't want to come off the $10, you can tie up on the concrete docks on the water front. Those are not as bad and are technically in a no wake zone. This no wake zone is often violated by folks in cruisers that like to come by waking people at half plane. For some reason most of the offenders drive Sea Rays and Meridians.

Tex and I discussed leaving a car at the Marine Max dock in case anyone needs to go to the store (or parts store). Tex came up with that one. Since Donzi Vol is coming along, I thought it was a good idea.

There is also a restaurant that has dockage. I will run down there later this week. It is decent and may be a good alternative.

Donzi Weasel, ride with me and I promise you that I will keep your attention off of the heat. Promise. When we reach our destination, you'll kiss the ground and thank the Lord to be alive, just like Grizzly will when he arrives from GA.

And after the day on the water is over, we'll have the proper fixin's in the "saloon" to calm the nerves and toast the chance to do it again the next day. Tex, why don't I just rent a car? It is only 100.00 for the four days. It is farther than 1 1/2 hours, you have to go all the way through Atlanta, traffic, etc..... That way you can make sure the boat is nice and cool for the Weasel. No reason for you to have to drive 4-5 hours all the way down and back. Plus, anyone could use it to shuttle back and forth at Hales.

Google Maps has it at 145 miles and 2 hours 38 minutes. Just have a cold cocktail ready for me.

Amen to feeling Bushwacked! Actually felt pretty good this AM. Just have no energy now.

Thanks Bryan, Bill and the A-Dock crew for hosting such a great event! The fast run up and back down the gorge to Chattanooga was a great day on the water.

I find it interesting that jet skis want to avoid A-Dock - for good reason. I use to call them targets, but A-Dock has reached new unheard of levels for jet ski eradication.

Got the 22 home safe, sound and DRY - interstate blow-dry travel did the trick. Washed it and now safely covered and put away

-A three-legged Pomeranian is the head dog on A-Dock. Get in line, even if you are 100 pounds of yellow lab.

-A Donzi burns a lot less fuel at 40 than it does at 80. Cool run to Goose Pond, and we even saw a bald eagle and several osprey on the way back. Eight gallons left in the tank was cutting it a bit close, though.

-Always good to see a new set of faces mixed in with the familiar ones. Nice to meet you Stan aka “Inferno” and Susan. I look forward to more of those offshore racing stories.

-Grizz has hair! And more spunk than ever. He really did ride with a test prop for me in the front seat. Thank you.

-Cam is living evidence that there really are good kids out there.

-The people of A-Dock are some of the nicest, unassuming, well-equipped for a good time, folks I have ever met.

-Last Real Texan does still own a Donzi and seems to enjoy running it. Donzi Weasel takes about six cups of coffee in the morning to open the eyeballs beyond slits. You guys were a hoot on the fighting deck of the battle wagon in the morning.

-Thanks Russ for helping me out with the grill chef duties. Lot of meat to cook and they ate almost all of it. Thanks to everyone who kicked in with sides and desserts. it was a feast.

-If you couldn’t find something to drink, it was you own dang fault.

-Buizilla has some new tricks up his sleeve. Do it. Thanks for your thoughts on the set-up of the Flowerpot, yet again.

-DonziVol has a +1 in the good karma column for stopping to help some folks out on the water right before a driving rain storm.

-Sandbagger Emertius goes to Tom Riggle for selling his boat to Jason and Cathy and skipping the details on that slightly warmed over 454. Still a very nice running boat.

-The Baxters fly in true style with the RV and Harley in the back. If you haven’t ordered a DMRS shirt, do so before he runs out, they are very nice.

-If we had left ten minutes later for Chattanooga, we would have enjoyed quite the little line of thunder storms. What is one of our runs without a little challenging weather?

-The Gorge is some of the nicest running you could ever get in a Donzi. There were times we ran five and six across in great conditions.

-If you wear flip flops, chances are pretty good that they will wind up in the drink.

-Thanks to Hedgehog and Christina for putting this on and hosting us and many others in a steady stream of traffic on the Roamer all weekend. I did not know about the express stairs option until late Thursday night. Your buddy Brett aka “The Captain” is not human, squidbillie and all.

-Bushwackers can be bad news, but some custom Kettleone martinis can make a few folks do some different things too!

-Let’s do it again!

Thanks to all that attended the first annual gorge run. The A Dockers enjoyed the company and party.

The raft up this afternoon was fun. It was great to keep Grizz, Lady Grizz and Buiz on the water for another ride.

To those that want a snapshot of the hospitality, I would recommend attending the fall poker run. SE came to the spring run and that is where this idea was hatched.

More pics and commentary will be coming once I get back to the house. I have some awesome shots of Weasel.

I got to meet some neat new people. I hope to see them again.

Made it back late last night. I already miss A dock. Being my first gathering, I definetly had some highlights. I would say these are them-

1. Going 110 miles down the Tennessee with Jim in his beautiful Critter. Saw maybe 3-4 boats running and a few bass fisherman during the entire run.
2. Going 90 mph, what I call "neck fat flapping fast", in Bryans ZX
3. Driving Bill's X-18, amazing boat. It is perfect and needs nothing.
4. Jim taking Lock lifejacket safety VERY seriously.
5. Running up a beautiful gorge with 9 Donzi's, alot of the time running 5-6 wide.
6. Getting Bushwacked on A dock.

Thanks to everyone for making me feel part of the crowd. Great group of guys I am proud to call my freinds. I wasn't hard to find, just look for the really sweaty guy who wasn't Jim.

I have bunch of pics, but here are a few of my favorites.....

Man, I can't wait to drink them margaritas. What, you mean we came here to eat, not drink?

Todd is right, it is about the people. Got more to say, but have to get to work.

A few more-

"Stan, hunny, my arm is getting tired from holding this hat on for the last hour and a half." "Don't worry Susan only 55 miles to go......"

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w190/johnnyalltrans/IMGP0033.jpg

Man, I'm not feeling to Mojo at this ramp. I think I will wait Bryan out and let him be first and see how it goes with the ZX.

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w190/johnnyalltrans/IMGP0074.jpg

"Baxter, for the love of god man, if I have any chance of the Flower Pot taking on Tex's ZX, you have to go on a diet...."

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w190/johnnyalltrans/IMGP0087.jpg

"Alright everyone, boats pointed all the same way, everyone needs dock lines that are the color of your hull and rub rail screws need to be the same direction before we go to lunch."

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w190/johnnyalltrans/IMGP0088.jpg

"I'll have the fish and chips. Yep, same for me, fish and chips. Are the fish and chips good? They are, I will get those. Fish and chips for me. What are you getting? Fish and Chips? Thats what I'll have then. Hey Weasel, I'll trade you a crab cake for some of your fish and chips."

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w190/johnnyalltrans/IMGP0040.jpg

Ahhh, found the sweet spot. 110 miles at 3950 rpms and I don't give a **** how fast everyone else is going.

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w190/johnnyalltrans/IMGP0064.jpg

"Weasel, I'm glad that dude decided to sack up and cook us some burgers. He had no idea how close his life came to ending......."

Got more.

Make sure you grab the Donzi keys at the docks. Poodle already has our trailer hooked to his RV to assist us at the ramp. He is so helpful...

Haha...it's all good. I had a blast, and the boat ran great (even if it was in the back of the pack!).

What a great weekend! I needed a little time away from the ordinary, and I think a lot of my fellow attendees did as well. It was great getting to know some of you guys better and sharing some great stories. My list of what I learned:

1. There is something special about East TN (especially A-Dock!)
2. Bushwackers are a good thing...in moderation
3. I brought the wrong pie
4. It's a good thing that I like the view of the back of a Donzi
5. I need a big boat (known that one for a while)
6. Most importantly: It feels really good to be the guy towing a boat rather than the guy being towed!

Had fun guys...let's do it again sooner rather than later.

All the best,
David

p.s. glad to be here :D

Thanks to all! The Donzi crowd and A Dock sure know how to host an event. The hospitality of A dock, Hedge, Tex, RT, and the rest of the gang was spectacular. It was great to meet Hedge (The Roamer is HUGE and beautiful!), Tex and his great family (The Pacemaker and neck flapping fast ZX are beautiful boats!), Jim and his super clean Critter is like a time capsule (It was great to meet the legend and chat about diesels and Donzi's), Stan and Susan (I look forward to meeting up on Lanier and chatting about your colorful racing history and seeing two teal 22's on Lanier! Good luck with your build.), Donzi Vol it was great to meet you and check out the 18, lookin' good!, Red Dog, it was great to meet you and what a nice 22! and did I mention I got to meet the Weasel! It was a pleasure and I hope you get your critter back together soon. Make sure you and the gang make it out here soon!

It was nice to see Randy and Barb (lookin' good Grizz with the killer smile! We need to have a Lanier run whenever you and Barb are ready!), Scott and Heidi (Scott, if you still have shirts, let me know and we can try to meet up Friday), Russ and Shelia (The silver bullet is lookin' great and was the only one with dry seats after lunch! hmmm), Todd and Jill (thanks for giving Kathy a ride to A Dock and the flower pot is just stunning! I need a ride next time! As for Tom and his sandbagging about Tomahawk, I guess I just have big shoes to fill:grin:).

Thanks to those we didn't mention as well. We had a great time! Chatt was a beautiful setting for a great run with great people, great food, and great boats. We look forward to next time...

Thanks for everything!

Man, tough week. Wish I was back at ole A dock drinking a whacker.

Russ and Jason, it was nice to meet both of you and I wish I had had more time to hang out. Next time.

Stan, had a great time with you and Susan. Tell Susan we do have cattle drives in Jackson and she is more than welcome to come participate!!!

Grizz and Barbara, had a great time. Great to finally meet both of you. I always wondered if Grizz was married to someone who was more than his match. I can say he is now.

Jim, your Critter is amazing. Glad I got to burn some fuel with ya. I can honestly say that yours is probably nicer than mine, but not by much!!!

Scott, very nice to meet you finally. Thanks for the board, the t-shirts, and whatever the hell drinks you were making me. Tasty, but potent. Heidi is a great person and I really enjoyed talking with her.

Bryan and Bill, see ya this winter. We know where we stand.....

Finally, Tripper. The Flower Pot is amazing. Had a ball hanging out with you and Jill.

Critter isn't running again, bummer.

Yeah, you probably should have headed our way. Or at least sent a representative like the one you had with you at AOTH. Has she gotten used to not having a "place to lay out" yet?

Nice tag line, BTW. Love the windshield debate...

and in comparison, this week really, really sucked. I truly do live in the real life equivalent of Dilbert. Amazing.

Is their such a thing as PDRS? Post Donzi Rally Syndorme? If so, the perscribed martini therapy is not working.
Need that Bushwacker recipe...

I have the recipe in the truck and will post it later. You will need to scale it down unless you have a group. I am thinking about a batch myself. Got a professional blender on Roamer Girl

I had a Tripper martini on Sat. It was not the same.

Yikes,

Sorry for the delayed response.

Red Dog Posted it on the thread "Bushwhacked Again"

Ours is similar but my amounts are for a 2.5 gallon batch. I don't use ice cream and substitute half and half cream of coconut.

Always feel free to call me for emergencies like this. Randy should have my number. If not I will resend.
